Candidiasis

Candidiasis is an infection caused by a fungus of the genus Candida, the most prevalent being Candida albicans. Candida infections may affect any part of the body - causing oral, genital candidiasis, etc. - and can be superficial (skin and mucous membranes) or invasive (more common in debilitated patients). This type of fungus is opportunistic because it is present in the oropharynx of about 30-55% of healthy individuals, becoming problematic when the immune system is weakened by the use of certain medicines, diabetes, HIV / AIDS among other conditions. Its clinical detection is performed by medical examination and, if necessary, laboratory cultures. Prevention of the appearance of such infections can be accomplished by keeping the skin clean and dry, using antibiotics properly and having a healthy diet, its treatment based on the use of antifungal medication.
