Disk displacement (TMJ)
The temporomandibular joint is located in front of the ear, between the jaw and the cranium, and between these two surfaces lies the articular disk, responsible for the fluidity of jaw movements. A disk displacement is an intra-capsular biomechanical disorder that involves the disk-condyle complex: when the mouth is closed, the disk is displaced from its usual position and lies in front of the condyle. It may also be displaced in other directions (inwards or outwards). Joint noise may occur during mouth opening and closing and is frequently associated with a jaw block, making it difficult to open your mouth or to chew.
If you have any of these symptoms and suspect you may suffer from temporomandibular joint disk displacement, schedule an appointment with one of our Occlusion specialized dentists or contact us.
