HPV – Human papillomavirus
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection. Although generally innocuous, it can sometimes originate warts and condylomas in the genital and oropharyngeal areas; and in rare situations it can progress to cancer, especially at the level of the cervix. Cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women, with a slow and usually asymptomatic course. Prevention of infection depends primarily on using protection with a condom during vaginal, oral or anal intercourse. Currently there are 2 vaccines that offer protection for types 16, 18, protecting against about 70% of cases that can lead to cervical cancer. In addition to this care, if you are a woman, you should also conduct a gynecological examination annually to check for cervical cancer.
