Ankylosis (TMJ)

Ankylosis or bony fusion is a joining of the bone surfaces that make up the temporomandibular joint, caused by bone cell proliferation. It is preceded by a history of progressive loss in joint mobility that leads to a severe mouth opening limitation. Ankylosis may result in complete joint immobilization and, as such, it requires specialized examination and treatment, complemented by diagnostic imaging exams, namely a CT/CBCT.

If you have any of these symptoms and suspect you may suffer from temporomandibular joint ankylosis, schedule an appointment with one of our Occlusion specialized dentists or contact us.
