Sleep apnea

Snoring results from a sound caused by the vibration of the palate and the walls of the pharynx. Snoring may be the early stage of sleep apnea syndrome, since 90% of those with this syndrome suffer from snoring. Most people with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome have pharyngeal changes, with airway obstruction at any level between the epiglottis and the nasal passages, often associated with excessive weight gain and other risk factors. Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a sleep-related respiratory disorder. Doctors have a set of tools for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea, such as endoscopic exams, polygraph study of night sleep and surgery if necessary to treat snoring. The most frequent medical treatment in OSAS is the use of an overnight device that advances the mandible or one that increases pressure in the upper airways, thereby preventing apneas.
