Subluxation is a jaw hypermobility disorder. When opening the mouth, the condyle-disk complex gets ahead of the articular eminence and is unable to return to its normal position. The affected person has its mouth locked temporarily, in a wide-open position, but is able to reposition it without medical assistance and close it again.
